Our CCTV inspection uncovered a large hole in an incorrectly fitted WC connection beneath the bathroom floor. We replaced the damaged pipework with a solid connection and installed a rat gate in the appropriate manhole to help prevent further rodent access.

A 10-Year Rat Problem Traced to Poorly Installed WC Pipework
The homeowners in Winchmore Hill, Enfield, reported recurring rat problems over approximately 10 years. Various pest-control companies had attended during that time, but the problem kept returning.
Recently, the homeowners had heard increased scratching noises. Their dog would also bark around the garage conversion, which had been carried out approximately 10 years earlier.
Rapid Drainage and Plumbing Ltd attended to investigate the drainage. Our CCTV inspection identified a large hole in an incorrectly fitted flexible WC connection concealed beneath the floor within the converted area.
CCTV Inspection Reveals the Hidden Entry Point
Opening the bathroom floor exposed a poorly installed WC drainage connection incorporating three pan connectors and a damaged flexible section.
The hole provided a route for rats to escape from the drainage into the underfloor space. Our inspection traced the entry point to this defective pipework, associated with the garage conversion.
We removed the defective arrangement and installed a new solid pipe connection to close the identified opening. We also installed a rat gate in the appropriate manhole to help prevent rats travelling towards the property through that drainage route.

Brown rats live in sewer systems and can travel through connected drainage. Thames Water acknowledges that sewers provide rats with places to live and routes to move around. The British Pest Control Association also identifies defective drains as a common factor in urban rat infestations.
For homeowners, the concern is a defect that allows rats to escape from the drainage into the building. Broken pipes, damaged WC connections, uncapped redundant drains and poorly completed drainage alterations can create concealed entry routes.
London’s exact sewer-rat population is not reliably established. However, an individual property does not need a large number of rats nearby to develop a serious problem: an accessible drainage opening can allow repeated entry.
Once rats gain access to a building, sheltered spaces beneath floors and within cavities can provide nesting areas. Where food, water and shelter are available, rats can establish themselves and breed.
According to the British Pest Control Association, under favourable conditions a female brown rat can reproduce approximately every six weeks, with litters of six to eight young. This helps explain why rodent activity needs prompt investigation and why closing an entry route matters alongside pest-control treatment.
Scratching beneath floors or inside walls may indicate rodent activity, but noises alone do not establish where the animals are entering. Inspection is needed to identify the access route.
Rapid Drainage and Plumbing Ltd investigated a recurring rat problem at a home in Winchmore Hill, Enfield. The homeowners reported approximately 10 years of problems and visits from various pest-control companies.
They had recently heard increased scratching, and their dog would bark around the garage conversion. The conversion had reportedly been carried out approximately 10 years earlier.
Our CCTV drain inspection identified a large hole in a flexible WC connection concealed beneath the bathroom floor. Opening the floor exposed poorly installed pipework incorporating three pan connectors and the damaged flexible section.
The opening provided a route from the drainage into the underfloor space. Our findings connected the rodent entry route to the defective WC installation within the converted area.
Pest-control treatment can address rats already present, while drainage repairs can close defects allowing further access.
Where a drainage opening remains, further rats may enter even after previous treatment. This is why recurring infestations should include consideration of the drainage, particularly where activity is near bathrooms, concealed pipework or areas affected by building alterations.
Not every infestation originates in the drains. The route should be established through evidence rather than assumed. At this property, the camera inspection and exposed pipework documented the defect.
Rapid Drainage and Plumbing Ltd removed the defective WC connection and installed new solid pipework to close the identified opening beneath the floor.
We also installed a rat gate in the appropriate manhole to help prevent rats travelling towards the property through that drainage route.
These measures served different purposes: the pipework replacement repaired the entry point, while the rat gate added protection within the drainage system. Continued monitoring is needed to establish whether any further rodent activity remains.
If rats repeatedly return despite pest-control visits, a drainage inspection may help identify a concealed entry route.
Rapid Drainage and Plumbing Ltd provides CCTV drain investigations, defective pipework repairs and suitable rat gate installations in Winchmore Hill, Enfield and surrounding areas.
